Before you go

• An FRN (FCC Registration Number). Register for free with the FCC through CORESbefore your exam — the FCC no longer accepts Social Security numbers, and you will need the FRN to be licensed.
• A photo ID (for minors without one, check with the VE team about acceptable alternatives).
• The exam fee. Fees vary by VEC and session — usually $10–$15, shown for each session above. Some VECs, like Laurel VEC below, charge nothing at all.
• The FCC application fee. The FCC charges $35, paid directly to the FCC, when it grants you a new license and again each time you renew. Upgrading from Technician to General or Extra is a license modification and carries no FCC fee — you pay only the VE team's session fee. (Upgrading also does not extend your ten-year term.)
• A basic calculator is allowed (with memory cleared). Pencils and scratch paper are typically provided.
• The exam: 35 multiple-choice questions for Technician and General, 50 for Amateur Extra. You need 74% to pass (26 of 35, or 37 of 50). You can attempt all three exams at a single session for one fee, working your way up as far as you pass.

Free and low-cost VECs

Several VECs (Volunteer Examiner Coordinators) administer exams at no charge or at reduced cost:

• Laurel VEC — administers exams for free (no exam fee) for all license classes, and is known for fast FCC processing.
• GLAARG (Greater Los Angeles Amateur Radio Group) — low-cost online and in-person sessions, with fees waived for minors, students, active military, and veterans.

Online exams

This site does not list online (remote video) sessions yet — everything above is in-person. Several VECs run fully remote exams over webcam, which can be handy if no nearby in-person session fits your schedule: HamStudy's remote session list, Laurel VEC, and GLAARG all offer them.

Indiana clubs that run sessions themselves

The list above comes from HamStudy, and not every team publishes there. Laurel VEC alone has 213 sessions listed nationally and none at all in Indiana — yet several Indiana clubs run Laurel teams, and a Laurel exam costs nothing. These clubs say on their own pages that they examine, so ask them directly. Each club's county page carries the details, including the one that matters most: whether you can walk in.
